Join the Albert Kahn Legacy Foundation for a fascinating Zoom lecture exploring Grosse Pointe’s Gilded Age “Power Couple,” William B. Stratton and Mary Chase Perry Stratton.
The familiar phrase “behind every great man is a great woman” takes on a whole new meaning with this remarkable couple. William B. Stratton was a prominent architect whose work helped define the architectural landscape of Detroit and the Grosse Pointes. His wife, Mary Chase Perry Stratton, was an accomplished artist and educator and the co-founder of Pewabic Pottery, one of Detroit’s most celebrated artistic institutions.
Together, William and Mary made significant contributions to the cultural, architectural, and artistic development of the region at the turn of the 20th century. Their individual accomplishments—and the story of their partnership—offer a fascinating glimpse into Detroit’s Gilded Age and the creative forces that shaped the communities around it.
About the Speaker
Paula Draper is an electrical engineer (MSEE) and REALTOR® whose professional journey has evolved into a deep appreciation for architecture and Detroit’s rich design heritage. Her lifelong fascination with architecture grew into a passion for researching the architects, designers, and visionaries who helped shape Metro Detroit during the early and mid-20th century.
Today, Paula brings that passion to her work as a REALTOR® and lecturer, sharing stories of the remarkable individuals and architectural treasures that define the region’s distinctive character. She resides with her family in Grosse Pointe in a home designed by renowned naval architect Hugh T. Keyes.
