The Foundation applauds the planned preservation and adaptive reuse of the Ford Motor Company building in Salt Lake City, as reported by KSL/NBC/Salt Lake City. Completed in 1924, it’s a rare example of Kahn’s western industrial work. The construction of the building marked Ford’s arrival in the Intermountain West and introduced a new, highly integrated model of automotive distribution, sales, and service that state historians later described as “revolutionary for Utah.”
The Foundation is encouraged to see Newmark Mountain West commit to a $40 million renovation that preserves this landmark while giving it new life as a modern corporate headquarters. Adaptive reuse of historically significant industrial architecture is central to our mission. The continued stewardship of Kahn’s sole Intermountain West project ensures that this important piece of Ford and Utah history will remain active, relevant and accessible for generations to come.
